２０１２年、２０１３年の冬は９年から１４年の太陽周期の頂点、太陽活動極大期にぶつかるので、オーロラを見るには１２年に１度の絶好の機会だ。フィンランドのラプランドでは１年のうち２００日オーロラを見ることができ、特に地磁気が３月と１０月に最も高い。運が良ければオーロラをみることができると思われているが、地元で考えられた豊富な種類のツアーを利用し、十分な計画を立てればオーロラを見ることができる確立が高まるだろう。

Popularly known as the northern lights, the phenomenon of green, blue and red lights that appear in the northern hemisphere’s far reaches has inspired wonder and awe among locals, travellers and dreamers for centuries.

北極光として知られ、北半球の奥地に現れる緑、青そして赤の光の現象は感嘆や畏怖を地元や環境客そして夢見る人々の間で何世紀も起こさせてきた。

Science offers another reason: the natural phenomenon occurs between the latitudes of 60 to 72 degrees, when electron-rich solar winds bursting from the sun are pulled in by the North Pole’s magnetic fields and collide with gases like nitrogen and oxygen in the earth’s upper atmosphere.
